Dr. Katy Hudson

Dr. Katy Hudson is a criminal justice educator, researcher, and former corrections leader with more than 20 years of experience spanning frontline practice, leadership, and higher education. As a Teaching Professor at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs, she has built her career around one central mission: preparing students for successful, meaningful careers in the criminal justice field.

Dr. Hudson began her career in 1997 with the Colorado Department of Corrections, where she spent 15 years rising through the ranks from Corrections Officer to lieutenant. Throughout her tenure, she held critical operational and leadership roles including shift commander, academy trainer, facility training coordinator, and security specialist. She also served on specialized teams such as the Crisis Negotiations Team, Emergency Response Team, and Incident Management Team. Her experience spans multiple facilities, security levels, and offender populations—providing her with a comprehensive, real-world understanding of corrections systems, institutional culture, and leadership under pressure.

In addition to her operational experience, Dr. Hudson played a key role in practitioner training and curriculum development. She designed and delivered training in areas such as use of force, incident command systems, security auditing, and emergency preparedness, and served as a subject matter expert on multiple statewide initiatives. Her work helped shape training standards and professional development for corrections personnel across Colorado.

Dr. Hudson’s academic journey reflects the same level of excellence and commitment. She earned her Ph.D. in Educational Leadership, Research, and Policy from the University of Colorado Colorado Springs, where she was awarded distinction for her doctoral work. Her dissertation examined how body-worn camera technology influences policing practices and community perceptions. She also holds a Master of Criminal Justice Administration (GPA 4.0) and a Bachelor of Science in Sociology/Criminology.

Her scholarship is both extensive and impactful. Dr. Hudson has conducted field research in major correctional institutions across the United States, including San Quentin State Prison, Pelican Bay State Prison, and the Texas State Penitentiary in Huntsville. She is the author of two books on power, authority, and correctional environments, and has published in leading academic journals such as Journal of Criminal Justice Education, Corrections: Policy, Practice and Research, International Journal of Educational Development, and Research in Higher Education. Her work has also contributed to professional reports and policy evaluations for the Colorado Department of Corrections, particularly in areas such as normalization, offender management strategies, and institutional reform.

At UCCS, Dr. Hudson teaches a wide range of criminal justice courses—including corrections, ethics, criminal law, and management—while mentoring undergraduate students as they prepare to enter the workforce. Over time, she recognized a consistent and critical gap: many students graduate with strong academic knowledge but lack the practical tools, professional networks, and career strategies needed to successfully transition into the field.

CJ Launchpad was created to close that gap.
